Minneapolis Sixth Most “Creatively Vital” U.S. Metro

I got this article from a creative young South Dakotan who has moved to the Twin Cities to capitalize on her creative skills. An economic analysis of "creative vitality" finds that Minneapolis ranks sixth nationwide for the amount of economic activity generated by the creative arts industry. According to the report commissioned by Minneapolis city government, artists and their ilk generate over $700 million in economic activity for Minneapolis, including $430 million in retail sales. That $430 million is 70% of what sports generates for Minneapolis.

The Colorado outfit that produces the Creative Vitality Index™ doesn't have comparable data for South Dakota. But who needs the arts when now we can have nicely state-regulated cage fighting at Sturgis?

Hmm... when my expatriate friend in Minneapolis said she is proud to be part of her new community, she wasn't talking about blood sports at the Target Center.

You don't suppose there's any correlation with a statewide commitment to education and culture involved here...wait..what?

Some of you might be happier in Minnesota. I'm just sayin...you should think about it.

we're going to torch your party like the lice they are, grud.

Mr. kurtz, I'm reminded of when my friend Bill would do that monolithic hip shake thing that used to get attention when the rest of us were grabbin' free beers. Are you shakin' young sir?

Grud, so what you are saying is that if you want education and culture to pick up and leave?

You should pass that along to Pierre...not that they don't agree with you. It would just make them feel better that you have their back. I mean, after all, you are the future of the state.

Besides...creative people are just..well...you know...like our own Bill Fleming. God knows we can't have independent thinkers like that out there!

Just imagine if there were a bunch of young Bill's running around being creative, organizing workers, taking a stand against injustice and...doing cool stuff.

    That could be bad!

    Ewps...sorry about that last post.

I completely forgot that we were supposed to be thinking about how cool it is using taxpayer dollars to spend exclusively on building infrastructure for heavily subsidized CAFOs.

    My bad.

grudznick is on to the idea that we would be better off if we reversed either of two accidents of history.

First, the eastern half of South Dakota was once in the Minnesota Territory. Eastern SD would be much better governed and wealthier if it remained in it what is now Minnesota State.

Second, South and North Dakota were then in Dakota Territory - until the offspring of the Know-Nothings severed Dakota Territory into the two states - Rich Dakota and Poor Dakota. SD would be much better governed and wealthier if it remained it would should have been Dakota State.

Alas us SD residents are winning the race to the bottom.

Grudz, most of us would be happier under Minnesota-style polices. We'd see more promotion of the arts and education, more promotion of public goods, and thus more young professionals willing to stay here to raise their families and build their wealth. What's not to like about that?

I am so glad I saw this Post. I had been thinking the other day what happens to bright young South Dakotans who just happen to not like to live where RWNJs control the State. They leave. What do we loose. As my 9th Grade Algebra teacher, Ms. Ellwien was quick to point out to us one day: The doctor that could save your life?

Grudznicker is probably glad past Republican legislators are staying here in South Dakota in prison.
