Reagan, Obama Agree: Brinkmanship on Default Threatens U.S. Credibility

Senator John Thune claims, incredibly, that President Barack Obama is hurting the country by accurately describing the consequences of the Republicans' unconscionable budget and default brinkmanship. Would Senator Thune have said the same about President Ronald Reagan?

Unfortunately, Congress consistently brings the government to the edge of default before facing its responsibility. This brinkmanship threatens the holders of government bonds and those who rely on Social Security and veterans benefits. Interest rates would skyrocket, instability would occur in financial markets, and the federal deficit would soar. The United States has a special responsibility to itself and the world to meet its obligations. It means we have a well-earned reputation for reliability and credibility -- two things that set us apart from much of the world [President Ronald Reagan, radio address, 1987.09.26, quoted in "Ronald Reagan Talks about the Debt Ceiling," Politifact.com, 2011.07.22].

Yeah, but that was 1987. Maybe Thune can say it was just the Alzheimer's kicking in.

Maybe Thune's Alzheimers is kicking in. I know he was around in 1987 mourning Tom Daschle's defeat of Jim Abdnor. And isn't every GOP officeholder these days required to take Gipper 101? Or is it just Gipper Mythology 101?

Thune's (and Noem's) belief system is that of the altered state of mind of the republican right which askews science, rewrites history, contradicts religion - in the name of promoting their ideology-of-the-moment. Throw Reagan in the ditch - no problem! Argue that business needs CERTAINTY, then shut down the government using vacillating inconsistent rationales - no problem.

As we the people reflected in a recent poll - we should fire the entire congress.

Blindman, thanks for that link! It appears the Democrats, true to their name, want democracy, while the Republicans are subverting it with dictatorship. Ironic, eh, Tea Party friends?
