HB 1065: Free Concealed Weapons Permits!

We have our first manifestation of gun worship in the Legislative hopper. Rep. Betty Olson brings us House Bill 1065, a measure to repeal the fee for concealed weapons permits. Currently, South Dakotans seeking to pack secret heat must pay ten dollars for a five-year permit. The Secretary of State's office gets seven dollars, while the issuing county or city gets three, to cover the required background investigation to ensure the applicant isn't violent, drunk, or on the lam.

That ten dollars to determine whether it's prudent to let an individual sneak a deadly weapon into public places seems like a bargain compared to the $46 the Governor's office charges just to open a few file cabinets and look for some papers that never killed anyone. But that ten dollars for a basic public safety check is too much for absolutists like Rep. Betty Olson, who think guns are the solution to all of our problems. (Wasn't Dakota War College just complaining about single-issue activists being bad for the GOP?)

With more gun-foolery sure to come, this point bears repeating: almost every bill the South Dakota Legislature considers on guns has very little bearing on practical community problem solving. Concealed weapons do not create jobs. They do not put food on anyone's table. They do not raise teacher pay or test scores. They do not make sick people well. They do not build roads, schools, parks, or bridges. Concealed weapons create more risk than benefit.

And bills tinkering with our concealed weapons laws only distract us from working on real bread-and-butter problems that affect all citizens. South Dakota House, let's shoot down HB 1065 quickly and get back to work.

You're right Cory. This is the kind of side issue that wastes time in the legislature.
Gun nuts might love it but it's a garbage bill. Seems like $10 for five years is pretty reasonable.

Just have to keep telling these people that Obama is NOT coming to get your guns

Do concealed weapons permit seekers have to listen to three days of anti-gun diatribes before they can get a permit? What if a woman that seeks an abortion swears to get a CC permit before the abortion, can she get a discount?

If you can buy a gun, the bullets for said gun, then you should not have a problem paying the measly $10.00 fee.

The fee should be increased to $100 not reduced. Part of that could go into support of the court system which gets loaded with gun-related crime.

Mike from Iowa you make a good point. I think they people that buy guns/permits should have to listen to lectures for three days before obtaining anything to do with guns. Doug, I agree about raising the cost for a permit.

Ah, Douglas, Rep. Olson wants us to subsidize her gun habit.

And hear, hear, on the three-day lecture period... if South Dakota is going to be consistent about personal choices.

What gun crimes Doug? I say raise taxes on your car and Big Macs, they kill more people than guns!
