Birther on the Rez: Blogger Challenges Rosebud Attorney General’s Indianness

Lakota Voice scribe Ann-erika White Bird is waging a birther challenge against Rosebud Sioux Tribe Attorney General Aisha Uwais-Savage Concha. White Bird is challenging Concha to prove that she is an enrolled member of the Taos Pueblo and that she is the biological daughter of Alfred Concha. To justify her challenge, White Bird offers a letter from Taos Pueblo Governor Clyde M. Romero, Sr., saying that Concha is not an enrolled tribal member.

Why do Concha's lineage and tribal status matter? White Bird reports that Concha told the Rosebud Sioux tribal council that she is an enrolled Taos Pueblo member and that her claimed tribal status gave her an advantage in landing the job last November.

But White Bird's criticism of AG Concha goes deeper:

Regardless of whether you did or did not receive extra points on your application for employment due to your enrollment claim, the People believed you to be enrolled by what you stated explicitly and by what you implied. To further clarify how you became appointed as attorney general six years out of law school, no litigation experience, unable to practice in federal, state or tribal court, and beginning with $102,000 salary you might consider making public how your points compared to that of other applicants. The Sicangu Lakota People question you and they deserve an answer [Ann-erika White Bird, "An Open Letter to AG Aisha Uwais-Savage Concha—Prove It," Lakota Voice, 2014.03.16].

White Bird alleges elsewhere that Concha is facilitating a power grab by Rosebud Sioux Tribe Council President Cyril Scott. Another tribal employee seconds this accusation.

Tribal Council member Calvin "Hawkeye" Waln, Jr., had high hopes for Concha early in her term but has since has accused Concha of micromanagement and failure to perform basic duties.

White Bird reports that Concha is thus far declining to discuss her tribal status.

I thought that it was interesting in reading the blog over the past few months that the prez was trying to get some attorneys from Texas & thst these attorneys from Texas made sure to write into their contract a solid percentage of any claim they settled 4 the tribe & that the Rosebud pres was also seemed to be trying to get other bands to agree to write themselves out of the negotiations for the Black Hills settlement. I'll have to re-read the blog to refresh my memory. Interesting that she has been censored in other news outlets though.
