Noem Working Hard at Great Wall of China

What was that Corinna Robinson said yesterday about Congresswoman Kristi Noem not doing the job we taxpayers pay her to do?

Rep. Kristi Noem (R-SD) and Rep. Aaron Schock (R-IL) enjoying a taxpayer-funded trip to the Great Wall of China, April 2014.
"We could build a big wall on top of Keystone XL! Make it a tourist attraction! Put in a HuHot!" Rep. Kristi Noem (R-SD) and Rep. Aaron Schock (R-IL) at the Great Wall of China, April 2014.

That's our Kristi, obviously really impressed with the opportunity to be in a photo with her friend Aaron from Illinois as they enjoy the junket we bought them to China. ("Codel", a Soviet-style truncation of "Congressional delegation," appears to be the preferred term of art for such junkets.)

She and Rep. Schock return to Washington this week refreshed and ready to do all sorts of work... or maybe not:

Members of Congress see the three months left until August, when they leave on a month-long recess and most transition to full-time campaigning.

Leaders could plan significant votes in September and will likely hold a "lame-duck" session after the election, but outside of emergency action, expectations for significant legislation after August are low [Lisa Desjardins, "Congress Returns: Could Do, Probably Won't Do," CNN.com, 2014.04.29].

I'm sure Kristi learned a lot in China. Too bad she's probably not going to translate that experience into any new policy initiatives this summer.

To the cynical that selfie begs a broader question....

  2. owen reitzel 2014.04.29

I'll be waiting to hear from the right wing conservatives that want smaller government.
Will they complain? I'm guessing nothing but crickets.

  3. 96 Tears 2014.04.29

Vacations R Us? Check out the six-pack abs surfing photo Schock posted of himself on Instagram from the Hawaiian leg of this very, very pricey but fun-time junket Wooohooooooo!!!!

    http://www.nbcchicago.com/blogs/ward-room/Aaron-Schock-Defends-Shirtless-Surfing-Photo-Morning-Joe--257003661.html

So, where's Kristi's husband while she and Aaron and their caucus pals are living it up in Hawaii, China and other vacation hotspots? Sloppin' the hogs down on the farm? Feeding her horse and spring cleaning the barn? Breaking his back while calving in the chilly rain?

Inquiring minds demand to know! Kristi, you've got some 'xplainin' to do!

  4. Roger Cornelius 2014.04.29

Kristi's original campaign still resonates with me, the ad she ran about how much her children will to have to pay on the national debt if we don't cut government spending.

So there she is in China (looking for EB-5 investors?) spending money that she says we don't have.

  5. mike from iowa 2014.04.29

Maybe Noem is paying back all those Chinese investors who lost money and green cards through EB5,one junket at a time. She wouldn't be over there throwing their losses in their face, would she?

I sure hope she's not trying to sell South Dakota agriculture commodities to the godless communist red Chinese. No self-respecting, hetrosexual, true conservative, patriot farmer/rancher with a liberty loving American herritage and traditional family values would dare lend aid and comfort to the enemy.

Noem continues to make blogging easy. We'd actually have to work to come up with comments like this on Corinna, wouldn't we?

  8. Jenny 2014.04.29

Funny, I thought Noem was wearing a Mickey Mouse hat at first.

  9. mike from iowa 2014.04.29

Cory-Corinna is a normal human being. Wingnuts are comedy gold.

  10. Deb Geelsdottir 2014.04.29

I don't think Congress members ought to be paid a salary. Let's pay them the minimum hourly wage for time actually spent in the Capitol building. That wage would not change whether Congress was actually in session at that moment or not. Nor would time on the legislative floor differ from time in committee. Time spent meeting with constituents, as documented by those constituents, would be paid at the rate of time and a half. Very moderate bonuses would be paid for legislation actually passed through their particular Congressional chamber.

Of course, all this would require the installation of time clocks outside both chambers, each committee room, and each office.

I don't have a problem with that. The savings in government waste would be so tremendous that the clock costs would be paid off entirely in just a couple weeks.

In the immortal words of John Belushi in "Animal House", Who's with me!?!!!!!!!!!

  11. Deb Geelsdottir 2014.04.29

BTW, isn't Noem damaging her right winger cred by visiting other countries? Might that deform her SD Values?

  12. Donald Pay 2014.04.29

Noem gave a speech on the House floor saying she went on this junket to learn about the Trans Pacific Partnership.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_1MsvVKH99o&feature=youtu.be

The best way to learn about the TPP would be to require the negotiations be opened up. Right now much of it is secret. Certainly, there should be no fast track for TPP. Where does Noem stand on that? She didn't say in this speech. My guess is she wants all the campaign checks to keep coming in, so she's going to fudge on taking a real stand.

  13. Lanny V Stricherz 2014.04.29

Larry Kurtz, I am just as cynical as you and your meaning did not go past.

  14. Bree S. 2014.04.29

Looks like Noem is on a codel with Cantor. While Boehner is imploding.

  15. larry kurtz 2014.04.29

Mr. Stricherz: you may notice that Tom Lawrence is suggesting that Rep. Noem's selfie partner is not entirely heterosexual a point not missed on David Montgomery who brought it up today on 100 Eyes. Jon Ellis seens to believe the Dems would be silly not to run with Noem's poor choices.

  16. Deb Geelsdottir 2014.04.29

I've noticed that Ms. Noem seems to be entirely heterosexual and I'm not entirely comfortable with that. I think that hetero aspect could be a good one to exploit. Of course there are some loonies who will say it's not her fault she's straight. She was born that way. It's not her parents fault either, nor straight friends who turned her straight. It doesn't work that way.

That's what the straight community will say, but you can't trust them. They'll stick up for their own, no matter what.

Me? I doubt her character. You all know how those straight people are. Sex. Sex. Sex. All the time.

If it gets out that Noem is straight, she'll lose a ton of votes. Her donations will dry up. She'll be done.

  17. Lanny V Stricherz 2014.04.29

Mr Kurtz, Sorry, I should not try to read minds, especially from this far away.

  18. Rorschach 2014.04.29

I have a feeling we're going to see a lot more of that photo before the campaign is over.

  19. larry kurtz 2014.04.29

It certainly is a mystery how a member of the LGBTQ community could be a Republican member of Congress.

  20. grudznick 2014.04.29

Ms. Geelsdottir, what if she is one of those that go both ways? That would be neato, wouldn't it? More useful than a PP Tweet-feed featuring the Roundsberg/God tweet fest.

  21. 96 Tears 2014.04.29

I'm tellin' ya, check out Aaron's six-pack abs when he, Kristi, Cantor and their buds were in Honolulu. These people were partying their asses off from Hawaii to Seoul to Tokyo to Beijing and the Great Wall. Who paid the bill? You, the taxpayer.

Next time you hear them crow about government spending and cutting your taxes, think about the Kristi and Aaron's selfie. Think about Aaron's six-pack abs on a surf board, proudly displayed by Aaron on Instagram.

These fakes have dragged down our nation and our economy. They offered nothing to replace Obamacare, they just voted more than 50 times against the only health care reform plan to pass Congress. Kristi, her buddy Aaron and their pals shut down the federal government. They choked on their own hubris and failed to pass a simple farm bill year after year until they embarrassed themselves. These party animals held up progress for the United States because ... well, because they could. This is the most unproductive Congress in American history and all we have to show for it

    is

    a selfie of Kristi

    and Aaron

    and a photo

of Aaron's six-pack abs surfing in Honolulu and posted for us all to see on Instagram.

    These are your Republican heroes.

  22. MJL 2014.04.29

I don't get to upset that a human moment like this occurred. What is more disconcerting is what you pointed out in the last statement.

"I'm sure Kristi learned a lot in China. Too bad she's probably not going to translate that experience into any new policy initiatives this summer."

It would be better if she could show the increased purchasing agreements with China and South Dakota Ag producers. She may have been trying to set up some more EB-5 deals though.

  23. Lanny V Stricherz 2014.04.29

Mr Kurtz, Have you never heard of the Log Cabin Republicans?

  24. Jenny 2014.04.29

Yep, 96 tears. Kristi just handed Robinson a priceless tool to start the campaign with.
As for Schock, those gay guys are always cute!

  25. Lanny V Stricherz 2014.04.29

But MJL, Why would she be working on EB-5 for the State, when the Governor of the State has already divorced the State from the program?

  26. Bree S. 2014.04.29

"This guy is gay because he has abs and tucks his shirt in, and you shouldn't vote for Noem because she's standing next to a guy who looks gay."

Yeah, I think you guys should run with that.

  27. Bree S. 2014.04.29

I'm sorry, I'm going to have to leave all this liberal tolerance behind for a few minutes and go do something else.

  28. mike from iowa 2014.04.29

Grudz-unfortunately she does go both ways. Pretty damn sure she has a round trip ticket, courtesy of US taxpayers. First class-both ways. Ask her if she can walk like an Egyptian.

  29. larry kurtz 2014.04.29

Imagine Rep. Noem sidling up to a bi man during her primary and against Matt Varilek.

  30. mike from iowa 2014.04.29

Noem does spend an inordinate amount of time with that dang horse. I wonder if Rick santorum knows about Noem and her horse?

  31. Joan Brown 2014.04.29

I have always thought the congress people take too many overseas trips. As far as that goes, is it necessary for them to go home every weekend?

  32. MJL 2014.04.29

Lanny, He has until the election is over. If he gets re-elected, I am sure that will come up again with cuts to education funding.

  33. Roger Cornelius 2014.04.29

Speaking of gay guys, Rev. Hickey has been circulating a letter he wants the Argus to print asking for the medical profession for input on the dangers of gay sex.

Don't have any tech savvy to provide a link, perhaps someone more gifted can go to his Facebook page and share the letter with Madville.

  34. larry kurtz 2014.04.29

seems like piling on, mr. cornelius....

  35. Jenny 2014.04.29

Really Mr Hickey, really? There are no facts or research to convince yourself that gay sex is any more dangerous than premarital sex, sex without protection, etc. If there was I'm sure Mayo Clinic research scientists would not be supporting gay marriage.

  36. Jerry 2014.04.29

Spring break rules!! Just a couple of prom queens on spring break.

  37. caheidelberger Post author | 2014.04.29

You know, MJL, Noem has to learn something about foreign trade and investment, since she's going to have to defend going to bat for Joop Bollen and his effort to recruit Chinese investors for an Iberdrola windfarm that was already built.

  38. larry kurtz 2014.04.29

President Nixon must be spinning over and having images of fornication in his grave.

  39. Bree S. 2014.04.30

Looks like everyone's hoping Rounds wins. I can smell the Democrat glee.

  40. Dave Baumeister 2014.04.30

I am sure this photo will resurface during the campaign,

  41. Rorschach 2014.04.30

Next time I see Rep. Noem I'm going to ask her to make her monkey face for me.

"C'mon Kristi. Make your monkey face. Monkey, monkey, monkey. OOHOOH AAHAHH. ... There it is!"
