Schultz Seeks Democratic Nomination for Secretary of State

Susan Wismer tweets that we Democrats have our first candidate for the statewide non-primary constitutional offices. Angelia Schultz announced this afternoon that she will run for the office of Secretary of State. She will face GOP nominee Senator Shantel Krebs of Sioux Falls and Constitution Party distraction Lori Stacey.

We'll get a second candidate soon: Wismer tweets that she plans to announce her pick for Lieutenant Governor tomorrow. Place your bets now! (Anyone care to lay odds on the LG having the initials SHS?)

In local politics, Phil Jensen won the recount in District 33, the vote pretty much stayed the same with Johnson gaining 1 vote.

    GO ROBIN!

  2. Flipper 2014.06.24

I'm saying odds for SHS are slim to none and slim has just left town!

  3. Tim 2014.06.24

I would buy the owner of this blog a beer if it was SHS, not holding my breath. lol

  4. larry kurtz 2014.06.24

It would make a run against Thune in 2016 difficult for SHS.

  5. owen reitzeljority 2014.06.24

I'll buy the owner of this blog a second beer if it's SHS. Hard to believe she'd want to play second fiddle though.

  6. caheidelberger Post author | 2014.06.24

No beer for me please... but how about a Squirt?

Second fiddle? True... but part-time second fiddle to the Governor isn't a bad gig for a publicly minded mom who still wants to put family first. And Larry, there's nothing stopping a Lt. Gov. from stepping down to run for another office... or heck, hanging onto that office and seeing if she wins.

  7. caheidelberger Post author | 2014.06.24

Plus, maybe Wismer would like to put together a full slate of Democrats from her stomping grounds. Schultz from Aberdeen, Herseth from Groton... what's next? Frerichs for School and Public Lands?

  8. larry kurtz 2014.06.24

Could a Governor Wismer appoint her replacement in that event, Cory?

  9. Todd Eppp 2014.06.24

SHS's political career can't take another loss. Two losses are usually the expiration date on a candidate for major office, IMHO. (I can't think of any two-time unsuccessful candidates for major office off the top of my head, though I'm sure there are some exceptions to the "rule.") Cory, put the crack Madville Times research team on it! Unless RW proves otherwise in the Senate race this fall.

  10. Todd Epp 2014.06.24

Just realized I added an extra "p" to my last name. If anything, I should downsize further to Tod Ep. ;)

  11. Jerry 2014.06.24

Richard Nixon comes to my mind Mr. Epp.

  12. Jerry 2014.06.24

You make it sound like the race is all sewed up even with SHS's involvement. As a matter of thought, I would say that when Stephanie gets the nod for the Lt. Governor, she will put the ticket on an even keel towards victory. By that I mean, a Wismer-Herseth ticket would win this thing in a close one, but one that would be nationally watched. By the win, it could finally open the doors for a better economic situation for the state of South Dakota and a dynasty the would keep it that way for years to come. Republicans cannot govern and have shown it time and time again, time to eliminate the good ole boys and get on with the business of business.

  13. Kal Lis 2014.06.24

At the national level Nixon lost in 1960 to Kennedy and then California governor's race before 1968 and 1972 wins.

My SD history isn't good enough to name someone who lost two general elections and came back to win a statewide race.

I believe Herseth Sandlin gets another strike because there are wins sandwiched between the losses. Trying to play the role of savior for the Wismer candidacy will waste that last strike.

  14. Jerry 2014.06.24

So that is two losses, before he wins and then his resignation. That means you agree then.

  15. Kal Lis 2014.06.24

Jerry, if that last one is directed at me about Nixon, I agree. I was typing on my phone slowly and got interrupted a few times before I could hit submit. You were just quicker with the Nixon stat.

On a broader note, I have a few questions about Wismer's short list.

Can she risk picking a sitting legislator? The Dems are really outnumbered in the legislature now, and I don't know if they have a safe district. I have trouble believing Dems want to risk a seat.

That leads to a second question, is her legislative seat at risk? I'll leave that to those who crunch numbers better than I.

Does anyone doubt that the Dem's best hopes Brendan Johnson, SHS, and Bernie Hunhoff will continue to sit this one out? If that's the case, are Dems looking at mayors, county commissioners, and rich dilettantes? I guess if the choice has Jeff Barth's ability to create a viral video or two, it might make the race interesting.

  16. Rorschach 2014.06.24

Get real! Stephanie Herseth Sandlin is nobody's Lt. Gov. candidate. She is top of the ticket material. She's doing quite well in the private sector, and she's not sitting around waiting for someone to ask her to run an uphill battle against an incumbent for a part-time political position. If she re-enters politics, and I hope she will when she's ready, it will be at the helm of her own campaign for Governor or Senate.

  17. Jerry 2014.06.24

Fun indeed Larry, this spark will bring the fire to the grassroots as just what the state needed to start to renew itself. For far too long we have been looking at our collective belly buttons and watching other states move forward. The only time, when the state decided to make a smart move on anything, was to build new and modern roads to Deadwood for gambling. That was it. After that, all the money that was supposed to fund education, got lost along the way. Our state is corrupt and it is clear that it is, the only way to overcome that is to change direction. That would be a Wismer-Herseth Sandlin ticket.

  18. Jerry 2014.06.24

Mr. Rorschach, SHS ran an uphill battle with Governor Janklow. She did a respectable job and was beaten by a professional with name recognition throughout the state. She could very well do that again only this time as a name that served her state quite well. Regarding the part time job, lets remember that part time job would allow her to stay with her child. That is something many mothers trade a lot to do. That is as real as I can get.

  19. Jerry 2014.06.24

@Kal lis, I always remember Richard Nixon as the most traitorous president, actually worse than George W. Bush, the United States ever had. He and Kissinger should have been tried for treason for what they did to prolong the Vietnam War. But the crook did say something that made me remember when he was defeated in California, he said that "you won't have Dick Nixon to kick around anymore" I only wish that were the truth. So that is why I remembered his loss.

  20. Rorschach 2014.06.24

It seems we share an admiration for Stephanie Herseth Sandlin, Jerry. But she won't be running for Lt. Gov. Not this year. Not any year.

  21. Jerry 2014.06.24

In a few short hours, we will know Mr. Rorschach.

  22. Rorschach 2014.06.24

I already know who it is, Jerry. Here's a clue. It's not Stephanie. But it's also not for me to disclose.

  23. Roger Cornelius 2014.06.24

Just for the record, I'll go with Joe Lowe

  24. caheidelberger Post author | 2014.06.24

Hey, R, I agree that it seems odd to put top-of-the-ticket material in the #2 slot... but then, does that mean lt. gov. will always be a second-stringer? If I can't pick someone really good for my #2, or if I can't expect someone really good to accept my offer of the #2 slot, does my #2 pick become irrelevant?

Hey, speaking of top-of-the-ticket material, what about Mayor Huether?

  25. caheidelberger Post author | 2014.06.24

But R, you know? Arrgghh! You tease! Can we play 20 Questions? Warmer-Colder?

  26. caheidelberger Post author | 2014.06.24

Larry, yes, Gov. Wismer would appoint a replacement... but the Legislature gets to confirm! See SD Const. Article IV Section 6:

"Whenever there is a permanent vacancy in the office of the lieutenant governor, the Governor shall nominate a lieutenant governor who shall take office upon confirmation by a majority vote of all the members of each house of the Legislature. Whenever there is a concurrent vacancy in the office of Governor and lieutenant governor, the order of succession for the office of Governor shall be as provided by law."

  27. caheidelberger Post author | 2014.06.24

Todd, on a Two Strikes Rule: does McGovern count as a counterexample? Lost Senate race to Mundt in 1960, lost Presidential race to Nixon 1972, managed to win Senate re-election 1974.

  28. Rorschach 2014.06.24

We should put top of the ticket material in the Lt. Gov. slot whenever possible. That person may be called on to lead the state after a tragedy.

  29. caheidelberger Post author | 2014.06.24

So SHS wouldn't be an unrealistic choice? Along with being able to do the job, SHS and Huether would both be newsworthy picks. They'd both have fundraising clout.

  30. Jessie 2014.06.25

If it does turn out to be SHS, Wismer loses my vote. I had reconciled myself to voting for someone I think incompetent, but this would be too much for me to swallow. I'll leave my ballot blank before I'll cast a vote for SHS.

  31. Jana 2014.06.25

Spoiler alert...David Montgomery has all but called it for Krebs. First look at the word 'try' in the headline. I don't ever remember a headline like that announcing a candidacy.

Of course going to paid political Republican blogger, famous for shilling for Thune and hanging out just a little to close to a fake journalist with a dating site for men, for expert analysis. Sheesh David, at least disclose the paid political blogger and party piece. Nope, let's just call him a prof for great credibility.

Then there is the discussion of money...because of course, we know that issues don't matter.

Then there is the description of Krebs as a farmer and businesswoman. Gosh, how does she ever manage to get off the tractor to run for office? Please...no mention of partisan political insider running for the office disgraced by partisan political hackery?

I'm also a little miffed that Angelia didn't return his call.

At least he didn't call Jeff Gannon for a comment...you might know him as James D. Guckert.

  32. Jana 2014.06.25

Future headline for that Sioux Falls paper.

"Argus to Try to Provide Political Coverage of South Dakota Elections"

  33. James 2014.06.25

At best she chooses Billie Sutton, an experienced legislator that has the back-story that will someday make him become a household name in this state. At worst she chooses Joe Lowe, which is not all bad as he is more charismatic than Susan and can pull votes from the West where she spends very little time.

  34. caheidelberger Post author | 2014.06.25

"Try"? Indeed, that seems at the least to be inefficient use of words. It occurs in the headline, for which a reporter cannot be blamed, but it also occurs in Montgomery's opening sentence. Two demerits!

  35. Jerry 2014.06.25

Happy Custer Day! Remember, George Armstrong Custer was a Republican!

  36. Jessie 2014.06.25

    So who is Susy Blake?

  37. Jerry 2014.06.25

She is who you will be voting for Jessie.

  38. lesliengland 2014.06.26

oh, ...custer, Harney... the soldier names we have plastered all over the sacred places of the Lakota. Oh geographical names agency, where are you?

  39. Jerry 2014.06.26

I was referring to the day George Armstrong Custer, the boy soldier that was going to be the republican nominee for president of the United States met the Lakota and Cheyenne up in Montana country. It was his misfortune that he and the rest of his command, never woke up the next day forever.

  40. Jessie 2014.06.26

Jerry, you said, "She is who you will be voting for Jessie."
Apparently. If she adds competence and experience to the ticket, I'm good with that.
The choice of running mate is very important to me. It shows more about the candidate than the running mate. When Obama chose Biden, Joe added experience that Obama was lacking at the time. I liked everything else about Obama except the lack of experience.
If Susan was smart enough to choose a worthy running mate, and I'd like further evidence of that as we go forward to November, then I can vote for her in good conscience.

  41. Jerry 2014.06.26

Right, and if not, then of course, you will stay home. I get that and I used to be that guy. What changed me was an epiphany that I had regarding republicans and their voting habits that was reinforced the other night with some dude by the name of Glenn Freema. He stated that even though he knew that Rounds was a crook and a liar regarding EB-5 and so on, as a republican, he was gonna put on a clothespin, to avoid the stench, and vote for him. That is their secret. They could give a crap about the vote getter as long as it is from their party. Why not be the same and vote that way, I reasoned. I sure as hell have not been satisfied with the results of sitting them out or pouting and getting all pissypants about who the dumbshit old fart leaders of the Democratic Party in South Dakota have done in the past. By the way, who are these guys anyway?

  42. Jessie 2014.06.26

I've gotten all that from you before and none of it affected my choice on whether to support Wismer. If you had bothered to actually read my post re SHS above, you would have noted that I said I was reconciled to voting for Wismer. If you want to translate that into using a clothespin, you are far off.
Where do you get off assuming that I will not vote in November if Blake doesn't please me? Get off your high horse, Jerry.

  43. Jerry 2014.06.26

Sorry, I sometimes get too damn smart for my own good and it makes me look like the ass I am. In my defense, your post was sometime ago and I had forgotten again about it.

  44. Jessie 2014.06.26

OK, apology accepted. As one of my favorite writers emailed me yesterday, "we will just let this one little embarrassing incident recede from our minds and never speak of it again " --Cary Tennis

  45. Jerry 2014.06.26

Thanks, I had written before about SHS and the reason for her choice was much the same as what you describe. She is not in the picture and frankly, I know little about Susy her lt. governor. I am hoping that they will both come out in support of all of the things that make me not a republican like being against the Keystone and for Medicaid Expansion for a couple, the main ones for me. What would you like to see as something that would make you a little more confident?

  46. Jessie 2014.06.26

For the moment, unless I hear otherwise, I'm going to go with the assumption that she is close enough to my views on the issues. What would make me more comfortable? Evidence that she is intelligent, sane, reasonable, competent and ethical. Wismer stumbled badly on the competency factor when she began her campaign and I'd like to know she will have someone in her administration who can get things done and advise her when she is about to blow it.

  47. Jerry 2014.06.26

    Onward and upward

  48. lesliengland 2014.06.29

oh, i will trust susan and her fellow dems.

but back to this guy custer, as i am sure you know, many on the reservations wish to change the names of custer state park and harney peak as offensive considering their significance to the tribes, and the poor judgement of "honoring" those two generals (a trespasser, and a child killer, it is said), like the medal of "honor" recipients at wounded knee massacre. this is the right thing to do. have you discussed this here before, cory? thank you
