SD Right to Life Ridicules Haber Candidacy as “Vindictive Grudge Match”

Two of South Dakota's most putrescent political creatures are showing signs of improving mental health.

Pat Powers continues to make progress recovering from his misguided affection for Chad Haber and Annette Bosworth. Today, Powers cheers South Dakota Right to Life's "absolute skewering" of the fake Libertarian attorney general candidate. Says SDRTL:

It is hard for us to imagine a likely scenario in which a legal team led by someone as inexperienced as Chad Haber would be successful in court against anti-life forces. He has zero experience for this position. Running for attorney general is not a game and should not be an avenue for some vindictive grudge match. Lives are on the line here. Our Anti-coercion law currently hangs in the balance as it makes its way through the courts with NARAL, Planned Parenthood, and the ACLU just waiting for any sign of weakness in any part of our legal defense. All it takes is one crooked pro-abortion judge to raise a legal issue with any of our existing or future pro-life laws to hold them up in court. Be sure to pick your legal defense wisely [South Dakota Right to Life, quoted in Pat Powers, "South Dakota Right to Life Voter Guide...," Dakota War College, 2014.10.02].

Yet Powers's piling-on also hints that Chad Haber, too, may be lurching toward just a little integrity. Last year, as he graffiti'd the Internet with fake press to boost his wife's impending fake Senate campaign, Haber cobbled together a shoddy screed fabricating pro-life cred for Bosworth. Bosworth and Haber pandered to the pro-life vote during their doomed primary campaign. I always had the impression that neither Haber nor Bosworth really believed in any of their pro-life statements.

And now, when he should be scrambling for pro-life votes for himself, Haber refuses to respond to the South Dakota Right to Life questionnaire.

It's a beautiful day, so permit my some optimism: perhaps Haber has turned over a new leaf. Perhaps he has realized that he, the attorney general, and South Dakota have much bigger issues to worry about than one narrow-minded activist group's obsession with a handful of doomed lawsuits over their campaign to oppress women. Please tell me that's the case, Chad.

Cory, now that Haber might be pro-choice, are you saying he is now acceptable to you?

  2. larry kurtz 2014.10.02

Anyone believing Marty Jackley has an interest in justice is delusional.

  3. larry kurtz 2014.10.02

If Marty gave one shit about a "right to life" he'd be suing his donors, Monsanto and Dow or Montana and Wyoming over cross-state pollution causing spontaneous abortions.

  4. 12 2014.10.02

As a woman and a card carrying member of NARAL Pro Choice SD... I might be half tempted to vote for Haber now just in case the AG would have to try a case to try to restrict a woman's access to reproductive healthcare....

  5. Bill Fleming 2014.10.02

If Haber was pro-choice, why wouldn't he just say so, Cory? He is after all running as a Libertarian. His non-answer is still misleading and dishonest as far as I can see. No way I'd ever even begin to trust that guy after all his bogus shenanigans.

  6. mike from iowa 2014.10.02

Troy-only whitey wingnuts are single issue voters.

  7. Craig 2014.10.02

Any shred of logic which is mixed in with phrasing such as "anti-life forces" or "crooked pro-abortion judge" should not be taken seriously.

These people are so out of touch with reality that they make the anti-vaccination groups look downright intelligent by comparison.

  8. 12 2014.10.02

Of course... consider the source, Craig. ;-)

  9. lesliengland 2014.10.02

troy, do you work for kochs now too?

  10. lesliengland 2014.10.02

if we had a lawyer like boz's and an investigator and a budget, rounds would be toast by now. perhaps that is precisely what duffy is doing.

  11. Troy 2014.10.02

Leslie, are you as nutty as a birther and those who say Obama is a Muslim?

  12. lesliengland 2014.10.02

I have not been in contact with kochs, so no. again, you?

please explain how your initial question to cory is not "nuttie".

  13. Jana 2014.10.02

Troy, remind us how you feel about ad hominem attacks.

  14. Roger Cornelius 2014.10.02

In reading Cory's threads, I have never seen a hint of him of him supporting Haber under any circumstances.

If Haber accomplishes only one think, it will be to reveal the corruption that exists in the attorney general's office and for that I thank him, won't vote for him, but thank him.

  15. grudznick 2014.10.02

If Mr. Haber persists in his oddballness, I suspect that Mr. PP will continue to skewer him when he needs skewering. he has not done as good of a job as Mr. H has, and hasn't been as consistent in his approach, but it seems he is coming around to our way of view. Vindictive grudz match or not. Heh.

  16. caheidelberger Post author | 2014.10.03

Troy, would an attorney general who agrees with me on the injustice and unconstitutionality of South Dakota's abortion restrictions by himself be able to "surrender" in the lawsuits? The state's been sued; the AG thus has a duty to defend the state in court, regardless of his political beliefs. If the AG went to court and didn't carry out that duty—didn't cross-examine the plaintiff's witnesses, didn't submit evidence or testimony for the defense, etc.—would the AG face any accountability other than political blowback in the next election?

That said, I am still unwilling to deem Haber a useful idiot. In no way will I facilitate his schemes. Just imagine what would happen if he had access to the state's purse and prosecutorial power.

  17. lesliengland 2014.10.03

you cory would be sued! :)

  18. tara volesky 2014.10.03

I am still working on getting Mike Myers to change his endorsement over to Chad Haber. Who are the other candidates supporting for AG?

  19. Craig 2014.10.03

I'd value a lack of endorsement over one which supports Haber. Anyone who knowingly endorses someone who doesn't bother to campaign for the job and someone who has made it clear the only reason he is running is because he feels he has been picked on either isn't paying attention or is trying to punk the public.

  20. Roger Cornelius 2014.10.03

Even wannabe blogger Stranahan seems to have dropped Haber, he's now selling T-Shirts on his website.

Lee can make more money off T-Shirts than he can off Haber.

  21. 12 2014.10.03

.... of course... why anyone would want a tshirt from Pornahan is beyond me...

  22. tara volesky 2014.10.03

The Democrats are shooting themselves in the foot if they vote Jackley over Haber. Annette and Chad have been fighting the machine years before they ever decided to run for office. Instead of bowing down to Marty Jackley, they are going to fight to the end and I predict she will be vindicated. I wonder how much money the state has spent on such foolishness.

  23. mike from iowa 2014.10.03

    Tara-define vindicated. In legal terms.

  24. Roger Cornelius 2014.10.03

For Democrats, not voting for either Jackley or Haber is actually voting for none of the above.
Mike Myers has endorsed Jackley, has he not? Should Myers to change his endorsement this close to the election would be foolish.
Either way, Myers would be voting for a candidate that's ripe with corruption.

  25. Roger Cornelius 2014.10.03

    Craig,
The only campaigning that I have seen from Haber is an occasional ridiculous meme on his Facebook page.

The last one posted by him asked if you remember drinking from the garden hose when you were a child.

  26. larry kurtz 2014.10.03

What prevents the crack Gant election team from spoiling any ballots it wants to?

  27. Bill Fleming 2014.10.03

Roger, I agree. Ideally, the Attorney General tally at the polls should show at least a 30% undervote compared to number of votes for other statewide offices. Send Mr. Jackley a sign that he doesn't exactly have a mandate. And Haber an unmistakable message that he's not fooling anybody. So far, we know Haber is only getting about 3 or 4 votes. Let's keep it that way.

  28. Roger Cornelius 2014.10.03

The Jackley/Haber contest has the potential of being the largest landslide in the history of our elections.

  29. Bill Fleming 2014.10.03

    Kurtz,
    Eric Holder?
    The DOJ?
    The US Constitution?
    The Incredible Hulk?
(...stop me when it goes "bingo")

  30. larry kurtz 2014.10.03

None of that stupid stuff matters to SDGOP, Bill.

  31. lesliengland 2014.10.03

"one crooked pro-abortion Judge" is what jackley is protecting the state from. funny. is there anything jackley is legitimately protecting us from? we should vote for neither of these candidates, right?

  32. Bill Fleming 2014.10.03

Kurtz, I think The Incredible Hulk does. ;-)

  33. Craig 2014.10.03

Tara: "I predict she will be vindicated"

Tara, I mean no disrespect... but you have zero credibility to make any such predictions, and even if you did you would be dead wrong.

We KNOW she broke the law because she admitted as much. Her entire defense strategy isn't that she didn't illegally sign petitions, but rather that she shouldn't be to blame because her lawyer told her to do it!

There is a right way to "fight the machine" but breaking the law to do so isn't it. Bosworth and Haber have left a trail of corruption behind them everywhere they have went and they only became interested in politics after they realized it might make some of their schemes easier if they were in positions of power. Then when they realized it wouldn't work to pretend to be Republicans for a few months, they immediately jumped to the next shiny object and declared themselves Libertarians without so much as bothering to explain how their political philosophy suddenly switched from far-right conservatism to strict Libertarian.

The fact you continue to defend them only serves as evidence of how absolutely ignorant you are of the facts surrounding their history, their actions, their fraud, and the many people they have harmed in their quest to benefit themselves.

Christ on a tricycle... there must be something floating in Lake Mitchell that has tainted the water. I can only assume Mel Olsen drinks the bottled stuff because thankfully he has yet to display any symptoms.

  34. Roger Cornelius 2014.10.03

    Craig,
Additionally, Tara has been one of loudest voice yelling "fighting the machine" and "crony capitalism corruption".
While Annette and Chad have not been part of "the machine", they are part of the corruption that takes place in South Dakota politics.
If Tara were true to her word, she would distance herself from the known corruption of Bosworth and Haber and not corrode Mike Myers candidacy with the criminality of these two grifters.

  35. caheidelberger Post author | 2014.10.03

Tara, put on your campaign manager hat and think strategically. What advantage does Myers gain from endorsing any other candidate in any other race?

Endorsing across the ballot offers these possible advantages:

    (1) Demonstrate party unity. Myers has no party and doesn't want one. Endorsing a member of another party confuses his Independent branding.

    (2) Win support (endorsement, cash, campaign resources) from the endorsed candidate. Haber's endorsement has negative value. Haber has no cash or resources that can help anyone else get elected.

    (3) Win votes from people who like the endorsed candidate. The only people voting for Haber are the inattentive (who won't notice that Myers endorsed Haber), and the "none of the above"/anti-main-party (who will already be marking Myers). Myers would gain no votes from endorsing Haber. He would lose several, who would recognize that endorsing Haber shows an inability to recognize an obvious con artist.

Tara, I welcome your explanation of what my analysis is missing. Tell me what Myers gains by endorsing Haber or anyone else on the ballot.

  36. JeniW 2014.10.03

I thought Tara wrote that she was no longer going to campaign for anyone, because she was tired of it. Maybe I misunderstood, or she has changed her mind (which she has the right to do.)

I voted this morning. I do not like Jackley or Haber, so I left that blank. I do not want to convey to either one of them my support.

I do not like Jackley because of his history. I do not like Haber because he, nor anyone else, mentioned what he has to bring to the office other than the "exposing the corruption." Plus, his changing his voter registration at the very last minute made me wonder how long he would procrastinate when dealing with legal issues.

  37. tara volesky 2014.10.03

OK people, I have always been up front and honest with you and have taken a lot of tongue lashings. I can handle it because I know I am doing the right thing. I got asked for several days especially by Roger who Mike Myers is supporting for AG. I put it off for a few days but Roger kept coming back asking over and over again who Myers is voting for. I talked to Mike about it and he told me to answer the question. I bet if you asked any other candidate who they are going to vote for AG., they won't give you an answer out of fear of losing votes. Well you got your answer from Myers. If you don't like his answer, then don't vote for him. At least he didn't dodge the question.

  38. Roger Cornelius 2014.10.03

    Tara,
    Are you dodging Cory's questions?

  39. Taunia 2014.10.03

Who cares who Myers is endorsing? Further, who cares what the staff of a candidate going no where says?

I'm curious as to how much Haber has bilked out of donors for this farce. Election 2016 starts November 5, 2014.

  40. mike from iowa 2014.10.04

    Tara-try looking up.

  41. Roger Cornelius 2014.10.04

For anyone that needs some entertainment this evening, go to Chad Haber for Attorney General Facebook page and watch him give Indians an Indian history lesson.

  42. grudznick 2014.10.04

Mr. Haber is a riveting reader of dates and events. It is no wonder that Attorney General Jackley refuses to debate him in a public setting.

  43. tara volesky 2014.10.04

They invited him to talk. They were shocked an Attorney General candidate would even show. He was quite nervous because he is not like his wife who has all the qualities that a candidate desires. I think it was good of him to come to Pine Ridge.

  44. grudznick 2014.10.04

Young Dr. Bosworth is missing a couple of qualities that most candidates desire. She just doesn't know it. But she is very pretty.

  45. caheidelberger Post author | 2014.10.05

Quite nervous? Gods help us then if he actually got the job of attorney general and had to face down lawyers suing South Dakota.

At least everyone here is clear on SDRTL's basic and unrefuted assessment of Haber's campaign as a ridiculous personal vendetta.

  46. mike from iowa 2014.10.05

What were Bosworth's qualities? The ability to dissect a frog, maybe?

  47. Lynn 2014.10.05

Tara is your candidate for South Dakota Attorney General going to be on the Argus Leader's 100 Eyes? It looked like they would love to have him on the show.

  48. tara volesky 2014.10.05

I sure hope so and I will assure you this Lynn, one of the first people Haber would hire to break the EB-5 scandals wide open will be Cory Heidelberger. He deserves full credit for bringing these scandals to the forefront. Thanks for your public service Cory. When Ed Schultz comes this week Cory needs to be his first interview.

  49. caheidelberger Post author | 2014.10.05

Now you're just making stuff up, Tara. Did Chad tell you he'd hire me? Tell him to go on the record with that claim. Tell him to hold a press conference on EB-5, make that statement, and explain why I deserve to be hired by the attorney general's office to investigate criminal activity.

  50. tara volesky 2014.10.05

No Cory, I am not making things up. I was absolutely shocked all the things Haber said about you to me. I asked him what kind of drugs is he taking. I can honestly say he didn't say one unkind thing about you. He told me you are the most talented investigative reporter in SD. It is because of your tremendous investigation of the EB-5 scandals and educating the electorate will be the reason Rounds is probably going to lose. As far as all the other stuff about he and his wife, there are some misunderstandings, but that is not nearly important as the corruption concerning Rounds, Daugaard and Jackley. He is dead serious and would love to do a press conference before Ed Schultz gets here so Ed can interview you. He will also announce to the media that he will hire the expert who has been breaking all these stories who happens to be Cory Heidelberger. The sooner the better. You need to get on the Ed Show. You can text him at 605-376-4202. The ball is in your court. Truce brother.

  51. Roger Cornelius 2014.10.05

I doubt Haber said all those nice things about Cory, given his relentless reporting on his wife that ultimately led to felony charges against her.
If anything, Haber wanting to hold a press conference before the Ed Schultz, is just an attempt to get some face time on national tv.
Cory is too smart to make that kind of association with a toxic candidate.

  52. tara volesky 2014.10.05

That's why the Democrats are whimps. It's easy to trash people online. The Democrats would rather remain exclusive than team up and win. Take a lesson from the Democrat Party in Kansas. Roger, the Republican Party love people like you.

  53. caheidelberger Post author | 2014.10.05

Tara, if what you are saying is true, I want to hear it from Chad's mouth, on the record. Given the personal video attack and the rumors he launched in April to damage my professional reputation, along with other evidence, I hope you'll understand my skepticism.

The ball is not in my court. Chad is the candidate. If he wants to say something to the press, he doesn't need me to call him and ask him to do it.

  54. tara volesky 2014.10.05

So Cory, do you want him to post something here, or do you mean for the record, have a press conference. I am sure he will apologize if he said anything hurtful.

  55. owen reitzel 2014.10.05

"The Democrats would rather remain exclusive than team up and win"
Then team up with the Democrats Tara?

  56. tara volesky 2014.10.05

They don't want me Owen, CD said I am delusional.

  57. Roger Cornelius 2014.10.05

Pity party for Tara, the Democrats don't want her!

I wasn't aware of a membership committee or anything else that approves who or who can't be a Democrat. In my own case, I make campaign donations from time to time, actively work for a candidate and most importantly, vote for Democrats.
Tara, tell what Democrat said you are welcome and I'll give them a talking to. This is Republican South Dakota, wimpy Democrats need every vote they can muster.

  58. Lynn 2014.10.05

Roger I still think Tara and the others should start a new unconventional political party here in SD.

  59. Roger Cornelius 2014.10.05

Maybe they should Lynn, sounds like a good idea.

Any suggested names for their party? Remember tea party is being used.

  60. Lynn 2014.10.05

Tara what would you call this new party? It would be cool if it reflected what this new party is. Very independent minded outside of the box, anti corruption yet tied to South Dakota reflecting it's history and diversity.

  61. Lynn 2014.10.05

    sometimes crazy

  62. grudznick 2014.10.05

Ms. Volesky, your man Haber would be wise to hire Mr. H as his top investigative henchman if elected. If he made that part of his public campaign can you imagine how many more people would vote for him?

  63. tara volesky 2014.10.05

Grudz, done deal. Cory would be the King of anti-corruption. Lynn, that's why I am an Independent, outside the box, anti corruption.

  64. caheidelberger Post author | 2014.10.05

For the cameras, Tara. Live, in person, recordable for print, radio, and TV, leaving no doubt that he really is saying the words you allege he would say.

  65. tara volesky 2014.10.05

Don't play games, I mean business.

  66. JeniW 2014.10.05

Is the "Right to Life" against the death penalty (executions?)

  67. Roger Cornelius 2014.10.05

    What games?

    Have Haber go public

  68. lesliengland 2014.10.05

I would be shocked if haber scored an interview with Ed Schultz. The story would be EB5 and Weiland outpolling Rounds and Pressler, and the resultant entry of super PAC money to neutralize GOP clout. Harry Reid and Tom Daschle arguing while the Nation risks falling into GOP hands in SCOTUS and both houses of congress seems a little specious. I have seen nothing of substance in the media supporting that a petty fight is really the issue. I do not understand why the media sees that as the story. It seems to me Harry Reid will act when he has to in SD and not before because of the number of other states in contention. This a very high level political chess game he is playing.

  69. tara volesky 2014.10.06

Roger, you need to quit bringing the Democrat party down by criticizing Independents and candidates from other parties. Democrats can't win alone. They need everybody. If you want to be exclusive, go Republican.

  70. tara volesky 2014.10.06

lesliengland, No way do you want Haber going on prime time. He's a rookie. Heidelberger is the man. Hubbel and Howie would be good too, because they are Republicans going after the Republican machine. It's better to have Republicans going after their party, then they can't accuse them of playing Party politics.

  71. Roger Cornelius 2014.10.06

Excuse me Tara, I need to what?
When any member of any party acts out of line, which they do at times, I reserve the right to criticize them.

My criticism of a Democrat is generally in the form of advice, not justification or explanations for their behavior or comments.

I particularly reserve the right to criticize independent candidates that are unfit for office when they actually help Democrats beat corrupt Republicans.

The Democrats are the best chance to beat Republicans this year, get on our band wagon Tara. I assure you that you will be welcome and wanted. Remember your oft repeated phrase Tara, "think for yourself".

  72. tara volesky 2014.10.06

Geez, thanks Roger. You are so kind.

  73. Taunia 2014.10.06

    Ayfs!?!

A few flattering comments to your nemesis to get him to stop writing about your crap campaign/life and your wife's legal problems? Maybe even get him to investigate the opposition or start a "Bosworth/Haber's Are Awesome" blog?

This isn't about "teaming up". Haber/Bosworth don't "team up" with anyone, even throwing their own families under the bus. I expect them to roll over on each other someday soon, maybe at Annette's trial.

This IS NOT Kansas or Arkansas. This bullsh*t ploy isn't even earth.

  74. caheidelberger Post author | 2014.10.06

Leslie, the D.C. media see the Reid-Daschle feud as a story because it makes for yummy Beltway gossip. EB-5 is complicated, and the corruption is happening in South Dakota, so D.C. pundits would have to do real work to understand it. Much easier to ignore the details of South Dakota and focus on the personal issues that fit their local "House of Cards" sense of intrigue.

This lazy Beltway gossip-über-journalism finds an analogy in this thread. Tara prefers to blow it up into unsubstantiated gossip, all the while avoiding the main issue of Haber's unfitness for office. Plus, comments accumulate here while my lengthy exposé of the legal machinations of Sveen's SDRC Inc. corruption draws only a couple comments.

Haber, too, is stuck in that rut: he goes for the salacious (foster children raped! Richard Benda killed!) and can't get his brain around any of the real details on which Rounds, Daugaard, Jackley et al. will hang.

  75. caheidelberger Post author | 2014.10.06

"No way do you want Haber going on prime time. He's a rookie. Heidelberger is the man." Tara is now contradicting the very angry and personal statements Haber himself made in just a couple months ago against the contention that I would have made a better Libertarian nominee for attorney general. Tara is positing that Haber would now walk those statements back on the record. Taunia is right: that reversal will not happen.

  76. Lynn 2014.10.06

Cory I believe Chad is making an attempt to manipulate you.

  77. caheidelberger Post author | 2014.10.06

I see no evidence that Chad is doing that. I only see evidence that Tara is saying things she can't prove.

  78. Lynn 2014.10.06

It could be thru Tara but wait and see if there is proof

  79. tara volesky 2014.10.06

Cory, take a leap of faith. Throw the personal stuff aside and think about changing the landscape of SD politics.

  80. tara volesky 2014.10.06

Whatever Cory, you had your chance, you just got scooped by the Native Sun News.
