Herseth Sandlin, Heitkamp Rally for SD Democratic Women in Aberdeen Tonight

In our discussion of Democratic U.S. Senate candidate Rick Weiland's bold progressivity, an eager readers contends that former Democratic Congresswoman Stephanie Herseth Sandlin must campaign on Weiland's behalf if she wants to have a future in politics.

Hey, Jerry, how do you like this:

SDDems Womens Rally Aberdeen 20141016Holy cow! SHS is throwing a political rally for all of the ladies atop the Dem ticket—Susan Wismer and Susy Blake, Corinna Robinson, and Angelia Schultz—tonight in Aberdeen, and she's bringing her friend Senator Heidi Heitkamp from North Dakota.

I listened closely to Herseth Sandlin's TEDx Brookings speech a couple Saturdays ago. She didn't sound one whit worried about her political future. But her appearance at tonight's Aberdeen rally suggests she's interested in promoting the political future of other Democrats in South Dakota.

p.s.: State Dems! Update that Stephanie picture! She's wearing her hair totally different now. And spell Susy Blake's name right!

How about adding Corinna Robinson's name as well.

  2. George Rokusek 2014.10.16

Forgot to mention, in the ad, of course Cory lists her name.

  3. Jenny 2014.10.16

Better late than never. It is so good to see Herseth and Heitkamp on here. Popular Amy Klobuchar DFL MN should be in there also. Bring it on, dem women!

  4. mike from iowa 2014.10.16

Must be a political haiku-you got five names and six faces. Who's who?

  5. John Tsitrian 2014.10.16

Good to see you doing this, Stephanie.

  6. Bill Fleming 2014.10.16

*leaving Corinna's name off of add* = copywriter's forehead slap?
Or is she in fact not going to be there?

  7. grudznick 2014.10.16

It is telling that even the SDDP does not really know who Ms. Blake is.

  8. Bill Fleming 2014.10.16

Susy Blake is you in a past life when you were a woman and were nice, grudz.

  9. George Rokusek 2014.10.16

Bill I just remembered her debate tonight on SD Public TV tonight with Noem.

  10. Bill Fleming 2014.10.16

*sigh of relief in the SDDP art department*

Thanks for checking, George. If that art department is like most, nobody ever tells them anything. They just give 'em the copy and tell 'em to make it look pretty.

Typesetters in response have evolved a little insider trade rule:
"Follow copy... even if it goes out the window." :-)

  11. JeniW 2014.10.16

Does this mean that people will stop giving Stephanie a bunch of crap for her not being as visible as they wanted her to be?

  12. Bill Fleming 2014.10.16

JeniW, LOL. Not 'till she endorses Ricky. ;-)

  13. John Tsitrian 2014.10.16

Getting close, JeniW, getting close, lol.

  14. jerry 2014.10.16

Jerry likey very much! Welcome SHS, indeed, welcome! I am kind of the kind of feller that likes to get his fanny handed to him every now and then and especially when it is for such a wonderful cause. I am feeling like a pinata with a smile.

  15. Wayne Pauli 2014.10.16

Quality Control, please SDDP. You make us look less than what we are (GOP?) when you hastily bring things to press. Let's do it right the first time. Too late? OK, let's do it right the second time.

  16. Lynn 2014.10.16

Did my duty and voted yesterday! I've been visiting with folks and many Republicans are voting Democrat this election here in SD. I don't know if it will be enough but they are tired of the excuses, lies and cover up from DD, Rounds and others.

  17. Lynn 2014.10.16

Here in SD there are a number of former Democrats who registered as Republicans so they at least felt they had a say in their votes here in SD but the few I visited with yesterday said they were long time real Republicans and just said they have just had enough with in particular what has been happening here in South Dakota. Just hope there is a multiplier effect with this that are not reflected in the polls.

  18. JeniW 2014.10.16

    Thank you Lynn,

One of the things about voting early is that I can laugh more easily at the campaign strategies, or in most cases (not this time though,) I can disregard everything.

  19. Steve Sibson 2014.10.16

How would you all react to a GOP poster announcing a "Men's Rally"?

  20. Craig 2014.10.16

Steve: "How would you all react to a GOP poster announcing a "Men's Rally"?"

That is pretty much every poster/flyer the GOP puts out Steve. Although to be more accurate, you should have said a "White middle-aged men's rally - American flag lapel pins and coordinating red/crimson ties are required".

  21. Bill Fleming 2014.10.16

Sibby, with thunderous peals of laughter. That's pee-pants funny. Good one!

  22. Jana 2014.10.16

Sibby, it was probably cool 10,000 years ago when it was a new thing.

Thinking that there is an email coming from the South Dakota GOP saying lock your women up tonight.

Hey, bring me a sandwich Sibby.

  23. Bill Fleming 2014.10.16

    LOL. Great, Jana!

    BTW, shouldn't that be:

"Hey Sibby, bring me a sandwich and shut the %$#@ up."

  24. Lynn 2014.10.16

Steve/Angelo hand me the TV remote and beat it!

  25. Bill Fleming 2014.10.16

    Yeah, Sibby, I agree.
    Women hate us.
Now make me a sandwich, hand me that remote, and shut the &^$# up.

  26. Jana 2014.10.16

Bill, thanks for the mentoring. First it was to not follow Sibby down the rabbit hole. Then there is the ever popular "what me worry stupid look" Rick Perry inspired blanket apology...ewwps.

Glad to add the "Shut the %$#@ up!" to my portfolio. I will attempt to use it sparingly and wisely on only those that deserve it.

  27. mike from iowa 2014.10.16

Sibster-your site has Andrea Dworkin listed as a feminist. Only in whitey wingnut, alternative universe world would anyone accuse Dworkin of being a feminist.

  28. Jana 2014.10.16

So Bill, just for practice...every time old PP at the SDWC posts something, should I say "Shut the %$#@ up!" or tell him to seek professional help?

  29. mike from iowa 2014.10.16

Ok Sibby,I stand corrected. Dworkin was a feminist-an extremely, radical fringe feminist. Comparable to tea-baggers being whitey wingnuts on steroids.

  30. Bill Fleming 2014.10.16

Jana, I think with PP you should always start with your sandwich bit. That's pure genius. Besides, like he needs another sandwich. LOL

Happy to be on your creative team, my friend. :-)

  31. Jackilope 2014.10.16

Well, wasn't Dr. Kevin Weiland set to primary Herseth-Sandlin until the last minute the year that she lost to Noem?

Perhaps I am still holding a grudge over some of her votes, including her Blue Dog stance against the ACA, but "Progressive" and "Herseth-Sandlin" don't go well together. I don't think she could run for dog catcher and I would hold my nose to ever vote for her again.

  32. larry kurtz 2014.10.16

Hey, Jack, about wearing your large intestine as a hat: it really looks good on you.

  33. grudznick 2014.10.16

Young Ms. Herseth is a fine lady and the head of and only real politician in the SDDP. Certainly the only one with real creds. You libbies who don't think she is libbie enough should probably put on your big girl trousers.

  34. Jackilope 2014.10.16

    Larry and Grudz,
How did the vote against ACA work for her?

  35. grudznick 2014.10.16

Mr. Jackilope, Larry and I used to dine together in the past but recently he has become more bitter and lashes out in an uneven fashion. That said, and just so you know that he and I no longer close dance at the Robinsdale Lounge like we used to, he's a swell fellow who is better suited to answer your question since he is a libbie.

  36. Roger Cornelius 2014.10.16

I just finished watching the Robinson/Noem debate, it was pretty much a repeat of the debate a few days ago.
Here's a Wow moment, I didn't realize how much Noem worked to improve the life of Indians on reservations and how her vote against WAVA helped speed the prosecution process of white men that abuse women.

  37. Lynn 2014.10.16

Roger what did you think of the debate? Decisive victory for Robinson?

  38. Roger Cornelius 2014.10.16

I think Corinna won, she was able to get the right zingers Noem deserved.
Her explanation for her vote against WAVA was lame and Corinna hit her hard on it.
Noem's rehearsed stand on Keystone was torn by Corinna and she had to explain the impact it would have on our natural resources.
Corinna had Noem explaining her votes on most issues.
The one I liked best was when Noem blamed President Obama and the senate for the gridlock in D.C., in essence blaming South Dakota's very own Senator John Thune for the worst rating they have had in 60 years.

  39. Deb Geelsdottir 2014.10.16

That's an excellent poster. I hope the rally was a big hit. Heitkamp is really doing well for ND, though I disagree with some of her positions. Craig, your response to the Republican white guy thing nailed it.

I didn't remember that SHS is that pretty.
Grudz. Now don't be having impure thoughts about her. She's a married mother you know. Don't forget that.

    Go women!

  40. lesliengland 2014.10.16

bill f.- i too enjoy colorful language and sibby's phenomenal graphic design imagination, but still prefer STFU as a federal justice directed toward SCOTUS pertaining to their over-reaching HobbyLobby decision. :)

  41. Deb Geelsdottir 2014.10.17

All right! Stephen Colbert has the perfect Republican political ad to end that troublesome gender gap. I doubt Herseth, Heitkamp, or anyone else can overcome this! (Colbert's commercial isn't till the end of this video. Keep watching till you get there. It's the best part.)

    http://crooksandliars.com/2014/10/colbert-makes-mockery-college-republicans

  42. mike from iowa 2014.10.17

GOP certainly has a full line of d-bags.

  43. Steve Sibson 2014.10.17

    "That's an excellent poster."

Yes Deb, we all know you hate men.

  44. JeniW 2014.10.17

Steve, you are so funny!! LOL LOL LOL

  45. bearcreekbat 2014.10.17

Deb, that Colbert link you posted made me laugh so hard it brought tears to my eyes! Thanks!

  46. bearcreekbat 2014.10.17

On a more serious note, is anyone going to be able to ask Noem about voting for arbitrary funding cuts to federal programs that address health issues, such as ebola. According to Joe Conason opinion column in Friday's RC Journal, tea baggers and conservatives, presumably including Noem, supported cuts $1.5 billion National Institute of Health, $13 million to the Center for Disease Control's Center for Emerging and Zoonotic Infectious Diseases, while the sequester took $411 million for global health programs, and cut the budget of the World Health Organization by about 25%. Such arbitrary cuts cannot have helped these organizations deal with emerging health problems like ebola and might be important for voters to consider.

  47. Roger Cornelius 2014.10.17

Sibson, Deb loves men, real men.

Her Colbert link caused to choke while sipping coffee and spewing it everywhwere

  48. mike from iowa 2014.10.17

Sibby,a teaspoon full of baking soda in a cup of hot water will relieve your chronic acid reality reflux and sweeten your disposition. Prolly put a smile on your face once. Don't worry, your face won't crack if you smile.

  49. Deb Geelsdottir 2014.10.17

I know, that video was hilarious! Razor sharp.

  50. David Moore 2014.11.12

Now that is said and done it's Angelia Schultz that is star among this crowd. With her outstanding writing career and impeccable military service it won't be long until she's giving silver-spoon Noem a real challenge.

  51. caheidelberger Post author | 2014.11.12

David Moore, I have to ask, did you work for the Schultz campaign?

"Star" implies emitting light and heat. I like Schultz, but please quantify the light and heat emitted by the Schultz campaign this fall.

  52. caheidelberger Post author | 2014.11.12

And while I don't like Noem, I'm not quite sure "silver-spoon" is an apt adjective. I don't think Noem was born into wealth and privilege. She has since bumbled into wealth based on government subsidy.
