Gary Coe Conservative Super PAC Says Howie, Not Rounds, True Conservative

On October 15, Gary Coe of Lead filed papers with the Federal Election Commission to create Many True Conservatives. Coe sells magic pills of unknown composition. By waiting so late to create his PAC, he can now sell political messages with unknown donors.

Coe, who ran for District 31 House as a radical Tea Party Republican in 2012, is spending his mystery money attacking Republican U.S. Senate candidate Mike Rounds and boosting Independent Gordon Howie, whose Republican gubernatorial campaign Coe managed in 2010. A reader submits this robocall from Many True Conservatives:

Gary Coe Many True Conservatives robocall 20141029

Hi, this is Gary Coe with Many True Conservatives. We need a real conservative to represent us in the U.S. Senate. Mike Rounds gave us the EB-5 scandals, higher taxes, the largest budget deficit in South Dakota history, and now he refuses to take the no-increase-in-tax pledge. No wonder the Senate Conservative Fund refused to endorse Mike Rounds.

We have a real choice this election. Gordon Howie is pro-life, pro-gun, and the Tea Party leader taxpayers can trust. Please cast your vote for Gordon Howie the real conservative. Paid for by Many True Conservatives, 605-559-2345 [links mine; Gary Coe, Many True Conservatives Super PAC robocall, 2014.10.29].

I first thought I heard MiniTrue, but Coe isn't peddling Newspeak. Coe, like Howie, would bring us an economic and cultural train wreck if we gave them the keys to the Democracy Maserati, but when it comes to Mike Rounds, their conservative critique is pretty accurate.

But it would be nice to know who's footing the bill for Coe's attacks and just what percent of Rounds's voters those attacks will pull away.

KELO senate debate is on right now.

  2. Bill Fleming 2014.10.29

    Howie is already swing haymakers.

  3. Douglas Wiken 2014.10.29

Howie is the best speaker of the bunch--unfortunately combined with the most nonsense...except of course when he was sticking the knife in and gutting Rancid Rounds.

  4. 96Tears 2014.10.29

Rounds was completely undone on KELO ... as Weiland says, we saw the real Mike Rounds. Arrogant. Two-faced. Bald-faced liar. If there was anything three of four candidates agreed upon it was Mike Rounds is a compulsive liar.

I'm trying to figure out why South Dakotans for years have voted for guys like Mike Rounds. Are they that gullible? Is it like they are in an abusive relationship and keep coming back for more? Apathy or so focused on life, trying to make a decent living balancing raising a family they just don't have time to look more into it? Some have their hands in the taxpayer cookie jar? They are so focused on being against a woman's right to choose that they turn a blind eye to other misdeeds and incompetence?

  6. Lynn 2014.10.29

Rounds was like a programmed and well rehearsed robot keeping to his script that Wadhams gave him about Obama. It was much safer for him to keep repeating the lines over and over rather than take the chance of really putting his foot in his mouth regarding the kloster#%&^ that happened under his administration. It was so obvious he was dodging and lying and if voters can't see that and vote this guy in they deserve him and better keep their traps shut and not complain about what happens in DC!

  7. Lynn 2014.10.29

Repeating the same talking points made him look like he can't think on his feet, not that bright of a guy and answer questions when challenged. He simply can't defend his record.

  8. Jenny 2014.10.29

I would have to agree, Doug. Howie has his own kind of Howie-like appeal. Weiland, although means well, just unfortunately does not come across as very likable. I do think he was a bit more relaxed as the debate went on, and warmed up more after Howie went after Rounds like a pit bull. Howie really put Rounds in his place, and even Pressler got in there a bit! Rounds acted like the spoiled golden boy that doesn't deserve any ridicule and to actually have the nerve to tell South Dakota that EB-5 isn't an issue!

What makes Gordon Howie so effective in his approach to the tee vee debate is because he debated CAH a couple of times over at this site. Cory must have put a lift in his step so he could do battle with the Goliaths in the room.

Did you all catch Rounds's total evasion of the EB-5 issue? he folded it in with all federal programs, didn't say a word about the specifics in South Dakota, and then prattled on about Obama and Keystone XL. Total evasion. Bless Gordon Howie for swinging the big stick, and bless Gordon, Rick, and Larry for all using the word "lie" to describe what was coming out of Rounds's mouth.

Rounds spent a whole hour in the woodshed. No one was happier to hear it was time for a commercial break than Mr. Mike. I hope everyone watches this at least once before they cast their vote.

I hear the auditor's office in Pennington county has received several calls from early voters wondering if it's possible for them to have a do-over. :-)

  12. Deb Geelsdottir 2014.10.29

Dang, wish I could see the debate!

  13. Roger Cornelius 2014.10.29

I enjoyed watching Rounds two prong attack lies aimed at Rick and Larry collapse tonight, they both addressed Mike's lies very pointedly and even Gordon called Rounds out on them.
Like I said on another thread, I wish we had a drinking game going on for every time Rounds was called a liar.

  14. lesliengland 2014.10.29

pressler and rounds were operating from canned scripts. if the bumper stickers are effective, we should worry.

debate timekeepers and interrupters were annoying, but the many democrats at the table loved the show.

rounds is an idiot. sorry to say that about anyone, but his devious run for senate is an abomination. i would not be surprised however if he wins given his overwhelming ad budget. He is a Koch Brothers front in action, i would guess, that we are witnessing.

i would predict that he will eventually be indicted after "the rest of the story" is pried out of the hands of the resistant SDGOP.

  15. lesliengland 2014.10.29

oh, rounds entire attack was anti-obama "failed policies". that was it.

  16. Jana 2014.10.30

Gary Coe of Lead must have hit a nerve, because like a junior high girl scorned, Pat Powers is on the attack.

Don't go there...it only encourages him.

But a quick note to KELOLAND...there's this American pastime called baseball...you might have heard of it. Why in the hell would you schedule the debate to go against game 7???

My remote got a workout tonight.

  17. Jana 2014.10.30

The ad not to be missed is Jon Stewart welcoming the Koch brothers ad to his show. This isn't just a rip on the Koch brothers, it's a snapshot of the whole GOP raison d'être.

    Enjoy.

Jerry, your reminder is well-taken. I may enjoy Coe's Super PAC attack on Rounds and any deserved damage it does to Rounds. We may cheer Howie's tenacious debating style. But putting him in power would be as bad for progressive causes as letting Mike Rounds bumble about in Washington doing the corporate bidding...

...or would it? Would a Senator Howie perhaps be so radical that he would draw lots of progressive outrage and campaign donations for whoever would challenge him in 2020?

  19. Bill Fleming 2014.10.30

If Howie wins, Sibby will have to move to Washington DC. ;-)

  20. mike from iowa 2014.10.30

Rounds sounds like a Karl Rogue protege. Focus on 2 or 3 subjects and never get off message. Doesn't matter what the question is,stay on message. That is how dumbass dubya got through debates.

  21. Steve Sibson 2014.10.30

"Coe, like Howie, would bring us an economic and cultural train wreck if we gave them the keys to the Democracy Maserati, but when it comes to Mike Rounds, their conservative critique is pretty accurate."

This is why crony capitalism is not going to be solved. You so-called progressives are helping create a political system that is ripe for the system of legal corruption to flourish, as it has in South Dakota. Need to do some actual free thinking, not the fake stuff that we find in Sioux Falls.

  22. Roger Cornelius 2014.10.30

    Sibson,
Why don't you ever propose ideas and solutions for all the things you hate about our state and federal government?

All we ever hear from you is whining and bitching about corrupt crony capitalism and never advocating constructive changes.

  23. Steve Sibson 2014.10.30

Roger, how about reducing the size and scope of government so there is little for the crony capitalists to gain with their corruption?

  24. Roger Cornelius 2014.10.30

Now that is a start Steve, both parties would like to reduce the size and scope of government. Republicans like Rounds want to repeal, repeal, repeal. Rick wants smart government to do what it is supposed to.
What do you suggest should be reduced or eliminated in government? What specific programs are we talking about and who is affected by those cuts?

  25. Steve Sibson 2014.10.30

Roger, Rounds says repeal and replace. It is a big government guy too. ANd the founders believed that you don't need smart government if the people were smart enough and free enough to take care of themselves.

What to cut? All programs that go beyond the enumerated powers from the original Constitution. It took 2 centuries to build the current unconstitutional government, and we will not go back in two days. I think we are all screwed.

  26. JeniW 2014.10.30

One way to prevent additional federal debt is to stop funding Mt. Rushmore.

There would be an outcry of protests, but oh, well.

    LOL

  27. Jenny 2014.10.30

Sibbinator, this country has always been controlled by a few very powerful families that promote it as 'capitalism'. You have no power to change it, Sib. Get that? No power. So quit your whining and crying.

  28. Jenny 2014.10.30

I think you should get on some Mitchell SD blog and try to stir up the folks there. I'm sure they would love to hear you and your biblical talk. There is hope for change in city councils as long as they're not as corrupted as the State and Federal governments. Run along, now.

  29. Roger Cornelius 2014.10.30

Steve, I don't happen to think "we are all screwed", I believe that our Constitution works and is a living document that the founders intended. You should know the basic civic lessons of how our government works, and remember that the founders had legalized slavery and that a President to find it unconstitutional. Much has changed since the slave owners wrote that document.
The point is Steve, we can't use a generic term of small government to solve this nation's problems and this is not what either political party argues.
When you have a Republican Mike Rounds blaming big government for farmers problems and at the same time growing our state government, you see where his economic policies are headed.
Big government is here to stay because everyone has their little corner of the money pie to protect, it is perpetual.
It is not reasonable to come to the conclusion that big government is bad and should be reduced, that is a comment with no action. Specifics are needed to make and support that argument.
